Project: Full-building interior remodel and furniture package
Location: East Saginaw St., Lansing, MI
Industry: Insurance / Financial Services
Size: 7,500 sq. ft. | 16 Open Workstations | 5 Private Offices | 1 Conference Hub
For three generations, the Rathbun family has served mid-Michigan from the same brick landmark. By 2023, that office felt dated. Rathbun leadership asked long-time partner DBI to oversee a top-to-bottom modernization that would preserve the building’s history, meet ADA standards, and deliver true ergonomic performance for more than twenty associates.
Project Overview
THE CHALLENGE
The team needed to refresh the heritage building while staff kept working. They had to coordinate the architect, contractor, and trade crews, and weave Rathbun-blue finishes throughout select areas to reflect the firm’s story without overwhelming the space.

THE SOLUTION
Modern Open Workstations
Haworth Compose panels, Upside height-adjustable L-desks, Very task chairs, and X-Series mobile storage give each associate full sit-to-stand range.
Light and Connection
Lower panels and glass toppers pull daylight deep into both floors, keeping phone-intensive teams comfortably screened yet visually connected.
Brand-Forward Palette
Three finish options were developed, and the chosen blend threads Rathbun blue and warm wood through carpet, paint, and case goods.
Community Boardroom
A Lansing-themed mural anchors the new 14-seat conference space, framed by neutral furniture that lets the artwork lead.
Access for All
DBI’s floor plan guided structural updates, including a street-side ramp and right-sized reception that welcomes every policyholder.

THE RESULTS
Rathbun Insurance needed a single, reliable partner who could understand their vision and honor their story. DBI delivered a thoughtful transformation that balances history with modern comfort. This new headquarters is ready to proudly support their team and clients for years to come.
- Ergonomic upgrade: All 16 stations rise from 29 in. to 47 in. at the touch of a button, reducing strain for associates.
- Brighter interiors: Lower partitions and glass toppers increase shared daylight and cut reliance on overhead lighting.
- Room to grow: A former conference room now holds six additional stations, meeting Rathbun’s five-year staffing plan without expanding the footprint.
- Community pride preserved: Local trades and a Lansing mural keep the renovation rooted in the agency’s home city.
